Mercer was drafted 18th overall by the team in the 2020 Entry Draft and signed an entry level contract with the Devils in December.
The 19 year-old will make his NHL regular season debut this Friday when the Devils host the Chicago Blackhawks.
St. John’s native Clark Bishop earned his spot in the starting lineup of the Ottawa Senators, despite suffering an injury during training camp.
Meanwhile, Alex Newhook will be on the ice Wednesday night as the Colorado Avalanche start the 2021-22 season at home.
