A Supreme Court judge will take a few weeks to decide the fate of a St. John’s firefighter accused of attacking his girlfriend in their Kilbride home.
No one disputes that George Pottle and an ex-girlfriend were fighting about everything from a messy house to money and infidelity.
Both had accused each other of cheating, with matters coming to a head on the night of April 7th, 2018 at their Bay Bulls Road home.
It’s alleged Pottle grabbed her by the throat, threw tools and a beer bottle, and head-butted her, allegedly breaking her nose and causing bruising on her face, arms and legs.
Neither called police, with her reporting the incident days later on the advice of a nurse at the hospital.
But the judge has also heard that both were on the beer and smoking pot that night, with the fight starting in their garage but later moving into the house with another dustup in the bathroom.
The defence insists is lying about the allegations, citing contradictions in her testimony, as well as her own text messages that suggested she was suicidal in the weeks before the incident.
The Crown, however, called the defence assertions “ridiculous,” saying most were irrelevant to the case before the court.
Pottle, who turns 47 next month, is charged with uttering threats, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
Still, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant last May, as the case made its way through the courts.
Justice Donald Burrage will deliver his verdict on November 4.
