Memorial University’s Harris Centre has released its Vital Signs report, a snapshot of Newfoundland and Labrador that includes statistics on population, health and the economy.
If Newfoundland and Labrador were a village of 100 people, 46 are over the age of 50, while 54 are younger than 50. Nine are Indigenous, two are immigrants and two are visible minorities.
The Health care sector makes up the greatest percentage of provincial government expenditures at 40 per cent, followed by education and other general government expenditures at 11.1 per cent each. Personal income tax represents the greatest percentage of provincial government revenue at 24.9 percent, followed by sales tax at 20.8 per cent. Offshore oil royalties represent about 10 per cent of provincial revenue.
Household disposable income in Newfoundland and Labrador increased to $80,109 in 2020 compared to $62,863 in 2010. Food banks saw nearly 11,000 visits in 2019, more than half of which were single people.
