A section of the Trans-Canada Highway near St. John’s was shut down for several hours on Saturday due to a significant spill of fuel.
The spill from an oil truck forced the temporary closure of the westbound lanes near Cochrane Pond as police and cleanup crews descended on the scene.
The smell of fuel was thick in the area, with some motorists also complaining that their vehicles were coated in it as they drove through the area.
It’s not clear exactly how much fuel was spilled but officials are looking into the cause.
