Evidence of an age-old superstition was recently uncovered in an unlikely place.
There is a long-held practice in the British Isles of placing tokens or charms in the walls and floors of buildings under construction to help ward against evil or bad luck.
Local folklorist Dale Jarvis says a renovation project on a church in Conception Bay North recently revealed evidence of a similar practice.
He says work on an old church in Bareneed, uncovered a horseshoe hidden inside the wall above the door of the church. Jarvis says while many Newfoundlanders are familiar with the old practice of nailing a horseshoe over the door as token of good luck, in this case, the horseshoe was completely hidden from view.
Jarvis is hosting the Halloween Haunted Hotline on VOCM tomorrow evening from 6 to 8, inviting people to call in with their ghost stories or spooky tales.
