Members of the local Sudanese community joined others across the country in pro-democracy demonstrations on Saturday.
In St. John’s, about 50 Sudanese were joined by other city residents in denouncing the military coup that’s caused turmoil in the African nation.
Mohammed Ali was one of the organizers of the local demonstration. He says Canada and other governments can show support and put pressure on military leaders by not recognizing the new “illegal” leadership.
Ali says internet and cellphone communications have also been disrupted by the military, making it hard to stay in touch with friends and family in Sudan.
Demonstrations were staged across Canada over the weekend, marking the largest pro-democracy protests in Sudan since the military seized control a week ago.
At least three protestors have been killed and dozens more injured in the unrest.
