Fire has destroyed a vacant building on Bell Island. The blaze broke out last night in fairly stiff winds.

The old fish plant ceased operations about 15 years ago. Most on the island considered it to be an eyesore.

Mayor Gary Gosine says it took the Wabana Volunteer Fire Department’s full crew four hours to knock down the blaze from the outside. He says six new firefighters in training were also on hand to help contain the fire.

There were no reported injuries.

Gosine expects to have more information on the fire later today.
