A Newfoundland pony in South River had little respect for live radio after making a run for it, while owner Tammy Webber was live on VOCM.
Pony owners and members of the Newfoundland Pony Society, Webber and Peter Halley were Linda Swain’s guests on On Target yesterday afternoon, but Webber’s 11-year-old gelding Stryder had other ideas.
Strong winds knocked down a rail on Webber’s fence, allowing Stryder to step over and out of his pen.
Webber and Halley joke that their ponies, while gentle and intelligent, are full of personality and mischief. Halley’s pony Max became famous after Halley posted a picture to social media showing him riding up to the drive-thru to pick up some coffee.
Webber is part of Pony Pals, a Newfoundland Pony rehoming program to help find homes for ponies that owners can no longer keep.
The Newfoundland pony is critically endangered and efforts are underway to develop a Heritage Park to help showcase the work Newfoundland ponies once did that allowed people to survive in a hostile environment.
