Travel is not recommended in many areas this hour as the snow continues to fall but it is turning to rain in metro. Many schools are either closed outright or are delaying opening for two hours. That’s the case in metro, as the school board says they will open—just two hours later than normal as the snow changes over to rain.
The Avalon Peninsula will get a mixture of snow and ice pellets and rain today, but it will turn back to snow tonight with another 5 cm. Winds will be 60 to 70 until about suppertime when they drop off but then pick up again late tonight and gust to over 100 km/h overnight as the temperature plummets to minus 6.
Gander and Clarenville are in for 30 cm or 40 cm while Harbour Breton, Grand Falls-Windsor and Marystown get about 25 cm. The southwest coast will get about 15 cm and the west coast and Northern Peninsula 10 cm.
Meanwhile, Eastern Health says facilities remain open and emergency services will continue at all sites, however, they are encouraging individuals travelling long distances to call ahead to make sure their appointment is not impacted by the weather.
