It looks like an eyesore that’s plagued the town of St. Anthony for years isn’t done causing problems for local officials.
The Canadian Coast Guard is monitoring an oil leak in the St. Anthony area reported on Friday.
The Coast Guard’s environmental response team determined that the source of a light sheen on the water near Anthony came from the Baffin Sound, a vessel that is being removed by a contractor under Transport Canada’s abandoned boats program.
The derelict 80-foot vessel has been a problem for the town for more than a decade. Federal funding was finally provided to the town in 2020 to have the vessel removed.
A containment boom was placed around the vessel and the Coast Guard is continuing to monitor the vessel removal to avoid any further threat of pollution.
