In light of the violence in Ukraine resulting from the Russian invasion, the PC opposition is calling for increased immigration efforts for refugees.
Opposition Critic Chris Tibbs says the images coming out of Ukraine are “both heart breaking and disturbing.”
He is calling on both the provincial and federal governments to prioritize Newfoundland and Labrador as a destination for people displaced by conflict around the world, and to fast track the immigration process for refugees to the province.
Speaking at an unrelated news conference Monday, MHA Bernard Davis says he would “absolutely” support an increase in immigration for refugees, stressing how important it is for the province’s future.
He couldn’t speak directly to whether the province is looking at welcoming Ukrainian refugees, as that’s Minister Gerry Byrne’s portfolio. But, he’s sure government will be doing whatever they can to welcome people displaced by conflict.
