A 25-year-old woman is dead after a snowmobile trip went terribly wrong on the coast of Labrador.
Police say the woman was one of four people who were travelling on two snowmobiles between Hopedale and Natuashish.
RCMP in Natuashish say they received a report Monday afternoon that a woman’s body was located on the sea ice about 11 kilometres away from the Innu community.
The woman and three others were on two snowmobiles that ran out of gas on Sunday night.
Two of the people left on foot, while a third person who had stayed behind with the woman overnight, left to walk to Natuashish Monday morning to get help.
RCMP responded with the help of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax, Hopedale Ground Search and Rescue, Provincial Air Services and searchers from Natuashish.
The two people who had left on foot were found safe in a cabin near Natuashish, while CPR was performed on the unresponsive woman on the ice, but she was pronounced dead at the local health centre.
The chief medical examiner’s office is assisting the RCMP with their investigation.
