The Newfoundland and Labrador Beekeeping Association has started a campaign asking people not to mow their lawns for the entire month of May.
The “No Mow May” challenge aims to keep dandelions and other wildflowers so that bees and other pollinators can have access to them. The challenge is not exclusive to this province, with many organizations across the country and the world promoting the initiative.
Don Paul, Central Regional Director with the association, says letting the flowers grow helps bees get through what he calls the “spring dearth.”
He explains that’s a period where there is very little nectar and pollen for both domestic and wild bees. When people cut those natural flowers, it removes a source of protein and energy for the bees.
