A family of foxes in Gros Morne National Park has fallen victim to human interaction according to federal officials—and a person has been charged.
A fox that had become accustomed to being fed by humans, as well as one of its kits, was struck and killed by vehicles on Route 430 in the park.
Park Canada reminds visitors and residents never to feed wildlife and that it is illegal to do so. They say access to human food kills wildlife. Whether the food is from roadside garbage or people giving them handouts, the result is the same.
Parks staff have seen and tried to prevent many incidents of people feeding foxes in Gros Morne this year. Recently, a person that was not feeding or intentionally interacting with a fox was bitten by one that had been frequenting roadside viewing areas. Efforts to relocate and live trap the animal were unsuccessful.
A charge has been laid for feeding the foxes. The maximum fine is $25,000.
