If island residents thought the price of gas was high, spare a thought for the residents of the north coast of Labrador where MHA Lela Evans says an extra 50 cents a litre on gas is causing a food crisis.
Evans says a bulk fuel shipment was delivered to the coast in late June, and on June 30, the PUB froze gas prices at $2.45 cents a litre
The NDP member says since the price was set and frozen, gas prices across the rest of the province have dropped by nearly 20 cents.
Because fuel was delivered when prices were high, residents of the north coast are paying 50 cents a litre more than customers on the Avalon.
Evans says the policy is adding to the crisis already felt on the north coast of Labrador. She says the global market we’re living in today is vastly different from that when regulated fuel pricing was introduced to prevent gouging.
