The saga of the City of St. John’s bike plan has taken another turn in the road.
The original Cycle Master Plan was adopted in 2009. But it was slowly discontinued over the next 10 years, with the city allowing painted markings to fade away.
The most recent 2019 Bike Master Plan recommends keeping bike lanes in areas such as Airport Heights and Mundy Pond.
It also calls for the removal of signs and road markings on routes that were in the original plan but not the new one.
Councillor Maggie Burton says there will be a grace period for people who park in the newly-marked bike lanes.
She says for the first 30 days, drivers will receive warnings instead of tickets as they get used to not being able to park in those lanes anymore.
Implementation in the Canada Drive area has been delayed pending review of a separate public hearing.
A detailed list of affected streets is available on the city’s website.
The city will also deliver information pamphlets to area homeowners.
