A pharmacist in this province has caught the attention of many after a tweet Friday morning in which she says there are three drugs she never recommends including one which is a popular remedy for kids with the sniffles.
Kara O’Keefe of Family Drug Mart on Bell Island never recommends Benadryl, Visine, or Docusate Sodium. She acknowledges that Benadryl is a popular drug, but it has a lot of side effects that people don’t realize. O’Keefe says the drug can lead to confusion, constipation, sedation, dry eyes, and dry skin, as well as a lot of drug interactions one should be aware of.
3 over-the-counter products I never recommend as a pharmacist:
1) Benadryl
2) Visine
3) Docusate sodium #twitterx— Kara O'Keefe (@kara_okeefe) July 28, 2022
She prefers alternatives.
O’Keefe says there are less-sedating antihistamines such as Reactine that you only have o take once a day. Some of the over-the-counter sleep aids contain the same drug—it’s just that they’re marketed differently.
