Farmers are thankful for the rain in the forecast today, but one central Newfoundland farmer is praying for a real downpour to keep crops from withering.
Chris Oram, who is with Mark’s Market in Wooddale, grows a variety of crops including potato, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, cucumber, turnip greens, and raspberries.
The farm has irrigation, but they’ve been trying to use it sparingly since their pond is not being replenished.
They have been trying to conserve the water in their pond, but had to irrigate over the last day or two.
Today’s forecast calls for 5 to 10 mm of rain in the region, but Oram is hoping for more like 20 to 25 mm.
He says crops are starting to get droopy and they need a real downpour.
We need rain in a bad kinda way. Irrigation for a couple hours tonight then tomorrow we start moving pipes to other fields. #prayforrain #newfoundland #mothernaturesabitchsometimes pic.twitter.com/HJIzAftaPt
