A half dozen of the province’s labour leaders joined striking Mount Pearl municipal workers for a rally outside City Hall over the lunch hour.
All of the major unions were represented for a wide-ranging show of solidarity with the roughly 200 workers who have now been on strike for five weeks.
They’re pushing back against what they say is the city’s attempt to create a two tier system of benefits that would leave new hires far beyond and below current employees.
The city wants to reduce sick leave from 21 days to 18, and down to 12 for new hires, adding that the pension plan would remain as is.
The union, however, says the city’s position is all take and no give, noting workers have made no demands, and would be open to accepting the same contract that recently expired.
Summer sports and leisure programs have been disrupted throughout Mount Pearl as the strike drags on with no end in sight.
