Residents of the community of Conne River are among those affected by restricted access caused by the fires in central Newfoundland.
The Bay D’Espoir Highway was closed for days due to fire and smoke, effectively cutting communities on the Connaigre Peninsula off from the rest of the province.
The highway reopened on Monday and remains open for the time-being, allowing much-needed supplies into the region.
Miapukek Chief Mi’sel Joe offered his thanks to those who helped the community.
“Thank God for the Red Cross” says Joe. The organization helped look after “a lot of people.”
The community also helped people who were having difficulties with the smoke.
They brought in two of their fishing boats from Harbour Breton, and while they knew they couldn’t evacuate everyone, the possibility brought a certain level of comfort to those who were having real difficulties with the smoke.
