Some of the damage experienced in St. John’s thanks to the heavy rainfall over the weekend looks to be extensive, but the city fared far better with Earl than it did with Hurricane Larry one year ago.
Several streets were closed off due to water buildup on Sunday and into Monday morning, with some areas—particularly in the Kilbride area, seeing complete washouts.
That said, Deputy City Manager of Public Works Lynann Winsor says the damage is “a lot less” than what was seen last year.
Winsor owes that to Earl being mostly a rain event, whereas Hurricane Last brought strong winds that caused damage to trees and infrastructure.

The City of St. John’s says it may be some time before certain damages caused by Earl are fixed.
Sandy Hickman and Carl Ridgeley were the only council members to comment on the recent flooding at yesterday’s council meeting.
Councillor Hickman says it may take days to reopen certain roads in the Killbride area. He says they will reopen the gravel roads soon, and that the city will repave them sometime in the fall.
Councillor Ridgeley, who represents the area, asks residents to have patience as the city assesses the damage.
He says the crews are doing the best they can and are working hard to repair the damages as soon as possible.
