A fire at the Tata Steel iron ore mine in Schefferville, Quebec has forced suspension of operations there.
No one was injured in the fire which broke out early Thursday evening at the company’s Timmins mine site camp, which houses about 180 employees, many of them from this province.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen area and was brought under control within a few hours by the company’s on-site firefighting team, with help from the Town of Schefferville’s fire department.
In a statement to VOCM News, a company spokesperson said everyone was accommodated in administrative offices and allowed to return to their dorm rooms by the middle of the night.
About 120 workers left the site Friday afternoon to return home pending the outcome of an investigation into the cause of the fire, as well as an assessment of the damage caused by the blaze.
