A 67-year-old woman who was charged with sex offences against children in the St. John’s area is now facing just a single charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The woman, whose name is banned from publication, originally faced six charges, including sexual assault, and chose to be tried by Supreme Court judge and jury.
But at the recent preliminary inquiry, the Crown chose to call no evidence on the sex charges, proceeding only with the single charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, which will be dealt with when the case is called again in late August.
Meanwhile, a 65-year-old man whose name is also banned from publication, still faces 31 sexual violence charges involving children in the same case, including sexual interference, beastiality in the presence of a child, and sexual assault with a weapon.
Some of those charges will be deal with at his preliminary inquiry which is also set for late August.
The RNC first announced the arrests and charges last year after the man and woman were arrested in Montreal, where they were living.
There is also a ban on the identities of the alleged victims, who were known to the accused.
Police believe the offences occurred in a St. John’s home between 1997 and 2009.
