SIRT-NL has issued a update on the shooting incident at Regatta Plaza in St. John’s on June 12.
A 38-year-old man, who SIRT-NL describes as a new Canadian, was estranged from his family for a number of years and despite extensive efforts, they have been unable to notify next of kin.
As a result, SIRT-NL has engaged the service of Interpol to locate the man’s family. Reports indicate that the deceased is 38-year-old Omar Abdul Gassim Mohammed, who was wanted by police on outstanding warrants.
SIRT-NL says out of respect for the family and their privacy, it will not formally release the identity of the deceased until they have properly notified next of kin.
In the meantime, SIRT-NL has gathered a number of exhibits, obtained video footage and has interviewed more than 30 people as part of their ongoing investigation into the incident. SIRT-NL Director Michael King says while it tries to be as transparent as possible, it will not be releasing information that it says could potentially compromise an investigation.
A full report on the matter will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
