Less than one day after an accessibility mat was installed on Lumsden Beach, the town council has had to contact police due to vandalism.
The town first posted to social media about the mat on Monday, noting that they have been working with ACOA and the province to make the beach more accessible.
The mat extends 100 feet down the beach, and then spans out another hundred feet in each direction so that people with mobility issues can get out and enjoy the scenery.
Less than a day later, town officials discovered that dirt bikes and ATVs had been driving on the mat, spinning their tires and trying to bury it in the sand.
The town says the mat was installed with lots of room for people to drive down the beach, and it is not for “joyriding on and destroying for fun.”
RCMP have been contacted.
