The Department of Political Science at Memorial University is condemning gender-based violence after three people were stabbed during a gender studies class at the University of Waterloo.
In a statement, MUN says they stand with their colleagues at the Ontario school and are disturbed by the circumstances that led to the alleged hate-motivated attack.
The department says recent attacks around the world make it clear that there is a risk to teaching on the issues of gender, race, sexuality and indigenous history.
They say they’re committed to ensuring these issues do not put faculty at risk.
The university plans to focus on safety for students and staff while teaching them to combat any type of violence and discrimination.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh have both released statements condemning the horrific attack. Conservative Leader Pierre Pollievre is joining his counterparts in denouncing the incident.
He points to the “catch and release” policy as the force behind the level of crime. He condemns all hate against any group of people, and ensures a country under his leadership will be more safe and peaceful.
