The Nunatsiavut Government is warning residents of Postville and Nain about elevated levels of oil compounds found in eggs and arctic char.
These contaminants are linked to diesel spill of 3,000 litres in Kaikopok Bay near Postville in 2020.
While the levels detected do not pose immediate harm, long-term consumption may increase the risk of cancer.
The Nunatsiavut Government is requesting a review of the potential health implications from Health Canada.
The contamination levels are higher in Postville compared to Nain.
Collections of pigeon eggs and arctic char are planned in all Labrador Inuit communities this summer, along with salmon in Postville and Rigolet, and sediments and mussels in Postville and Nain.
Caution is advised in other Labrador Inuit communities until community-specific data is gathered.
