The NDP says the merger of the health boards into one provincial body is further eroding health care in northern Labrador.
Torngat Mountains MHA Lela Evans says the provincial health authority reduced services for several days at the health clinic in Nain, the largest town in the north, but did not communicate the change to the public, the MHA, local government or media.
She accuses government of rushing to make drastic changes without proper planning.
Evans was concerned from the outset that combining four health authorities into one would mean decisions would be made in St. John’s without understanding the true impact on local regions.
She’s calling on government to offer incentives to encourage health care workers to work in remote northern communities, and retain them in the region.
