The Newfoundland Pony Society is turning to the public to come up with a name for a three-month-old foal pasturing at the Heritage Park in Hopeall, Trinity Bay.
The little filly, owned by Kevin Dawson of Bay Roberts, has been captivating visitors all summer.
The foal’s mother is Dawson’s Rhonda of Avalon, while its father was Dawson’s Bernie Frances. Sadly, the young stallion was struck and killed on the highway in Conception Bay North last year after escaping from its enclosure.
Councillor-at-Large Tammy Weber, who is with the Newfoundland Pony Society’s re-homing committee, says the foal is special because she is the one and only offspring of Bernie, adding “that makes her DNA unique.”
The as-yet unnamed filly is one of about two dozen Newfoundland pony foals born this year. The Newfoundland pony itself is an endangered heritage breed.
Submissions for the Name the Foal contest are being accepted at the Heritage Park in Hopeall, and online.
