A St. John’s city councillor says traffic calming measures installed in various parts of the capital are having the desired effect.
Jamie Korab says requests for action to deal with speeding is the number one complaint received by St. John’s City Council, even exceeding snow clearing and pot holes.
Korab says permanent traffic calming measures were put in place on Quidi Vidi Road, Ennis Avenue, the South Side Road, and University Avenue so far this year, while work is underway to install speed bumps on Craigmillar Avenue.

Korab the goal is to push traffic away from the so-called short-cuts and move it back on to the main arterials which are better designed for busy traffic.
He says he used to take Old Topsail Road when travelling downtown, but when the speed cushions were put in place he stopped using it.
Municipalities like Paradise and CBS have also put traffic calming measures in place to ensure that traffic slows especially around crosswalks and in school zones.
