RCMP in Gander have arrested a 34-year-old man from Quebec in relation to the “grandparent scam.”
The victim got a phone call yesterday from somebody posing as their grandchild, stating that they were in trouble with the law and needed money. It’s believed that they used technology to mimic the voice of the child.
The scammer picked up money from the residence but a short time later, the victim got a second call from the fraudster indicating that the charges were now more serious and required additional funds. This time, they went to the police department.
Arrangements were made for the transfer of money, but this time Gander RCMP were also invited along to intercept the scammer. They located a vehicle parked behind a nearby business in Gander and arrested Luiggi Giovanni Yataco on charges of fraud over $5,000.
Police are pursuing other similar incidents believed to have occurred in the area.
