The Nature Conservancy of Canada is asking people to take a moment to consider the animals that usually invoke fear in many people.
Animals like spiders, bats, owls and wolves are often depicted as scary creatures, especially on Halloween, but Andrew Holland says instead of being afraid of them, we should be afraid for them.
Holland says bats play an important role in keeping things like mosquitos and other insects down, yet their numbers have been dwindling significantly due to the spread of white nose syndrome.
Wolves for instance are often depicted as a creature to be afraid of, but wolves are seen by conservationists as a sign of a healthy ecosystem. In Newfoundland, grey wolf numbers are growing after the extinction of the native Newfoundland wolf approximately one hundred years ago.
