The Innu Nation says it “stands solidly behind” the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, a national Inuit organization that issued an open letter this week warning against false claims to Inuit identity.
The IDK was referencing the NunatuKavut Community Council, which it says is “not an Inuit rights-holding organization.”
There is a growing movement across Canada, exposing groups and individuals who claim Indigenous identity to access targeted federal funding and programs.
The Innu Nation has been very vocal about what it sees as NCC’s evolution from a Metis organization into an Indigenous group.
The Innu Nation says false claims to Indigeneity “have far-reaching impacts to Indigenous rightsholders across Canada.”
