Nearly $1.1 million in donations has been distributed to individuals and communities hit hardest by Hurricane Fiona in 2022.
The donations were held in special funds at the Atlantic Edge Credit Union, Salvation Army, and Port aux Basques Lions Club.
In order to distribute the funds equally, a committee was formed to sort through nearly $3.3 million worth of claims.
Committee Chair, Edwina Bateman, says 75 per cent of funds were allocated to residents and with amounts determined based on the claims process.
The applications allowed them to see where the gaps were in coverage for certain items, and what wasn’t being covered by government or the Red Cross.
Applications were divided by people who received government funding and those who were not eligible.
The remaining 25 per cent of donations have been distributed between seven communities who were hit hardest, with Port aux Basques receiving the biggest cut—around $215,000.
