A new student-led project has been developed to improve fluency in the Mi’kmaw language.
The language is at risk of becoming extinct, however some fluent speakers do remain.
With funding from the Canadian government, the Ktaqmkuk Mi’kmaw Fluency Project will launch the first official online school for the Mi’kmaw language in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The not-for-profit organization will hold virtual lessons for 10 months of the year, along with immersion events in Cape Breton and Newfoundland. The program will first be offered to those who identify as Mi’kmaw or have a connection to the island.
