A play exploring the lives of three Beothuk women is gearing up for a tour of Labrador.
Stolen Sisters, written by L’nu artist Leahdawn Helena and produced by Persistence Theatre, is a one woman show that centers around the lives of three Beothuk women and girls whose names are known, but whose stories have been misrepresented by colonial interference.
Helena says it was important to provide an Indigenous lens on the story of the Beothuk, one often told by people of settler ancestry.

She says when the narrative of any people who are vulnerable is controlled by someone else, it is at danger of misrepresentation.
The tour will see the show performed in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Sheshatshiu, Nain, Natuashish, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet.

She says they thought it was important to bring an Indigenous story of Newfoundland and Labrador to the Indigenous communities of the province that are often left off of tour schedules.
The tour runs January 17-29. More information is available on persistencetheatre.com.
