The PC Party has withdrawn from the province’s committee on electoral reform, citing a “lack of commitment” to the cause.
The committee was established in April 2021 following a controversial winter election that was hampered by the COVID pandemic and a level five lockdown.
The NDP has never sat on the committee, citing issues with its composition, with leader Jim Dinn at the time referring to it as “nothing more than window dressing.”
PC MHA Barry Petten calls that election “catastrophic,” believing that there were many clear markers not to go ahead with it.
The committee struck to look at potential legislative changes to the Elections Act, from Petten’s perspective, has yielded no success.
Petten says the number of meetings have been limited and they have had little to no input. He says a meeting has been scheduled for a few weeks’ time for government to present proposed changes to them. Petten argues that is not how the committee is supposed to work, noting that they are supposed to advise of changes that should be made.
