A polar vortex pushing deep into the prairies and parts of the US has resulted in record high electricity demand in Alberta and warnings about possible rolling blackouts.
Alberta was gripped in recent days in an extreme cold warning with temperatures dipping below -40 with the wind chill. That’s led to questions about whether the local electrical grid could handle a similar dip here.
NL Hydro says the local electrical grid is performing well and held up in February of last year during a cold snap that lasted several days. At that time, demand peaked at 1780 MW with reserve power still available.
NL Hydro says it has not had any extended generation supply issues since #DarkNL in 2014.
