As expected, reported flu and COVID cases saw a spike in December.
The province’s latest respiratory dashboard, updated on January 19, shows the number of confirmed influenza cases rose to 142 in mid-December before leveling off for the remainder of the month.
The numbers do no reflect the actual number of cases in the province as a whole.
Hospitalizations due to influenza and COVID also spiked over the same period of time before dropping off by the end of December.
The province is reporting a total of 24 hospitalizations due to flu over the last reporting period, including six patients in critical care. COVID resulted in 14 hospitalizations.
Not surprisingly, the spread of other respiratory illnesses also rose dramatically over the busy Christmas holiday period, with RSV leading the way.
