St. Mark’s in King’s Cove may have just 20 students, but its robotics team is off to compete in the MATE ROV International Championships after placing fifth in the regional competition.
Grade 11 student Olivia Taylor is the team’s pilot and CEO, while grade 9 student Jacinda Elson is the design engineer and tether technician.
Olivia says they were all excited when they found out.
“We were all in home room and Miss Churchill our mentor and teacher comes running down the hall, she was so excited. She’s like ‘Guess what?’ and we were all like ‘We’re going to worlds!'” and they all started to scream.
Jacinda says in this case, being from a small school has been beneficial.
“We’re all so close with each other, we never fight or anything, we’re friends inside and outside…so we all work very well together.”
The MATE ROV Competition World Championship takes place at the Marine Institute in St. John’s on June 25th-27th.
