A Supreme Court judge urged an Inuk woman to avail of all the programs and support she’s being offered as she begins serving time for manslaughter.
Thirty-year-old Lorraine Obed was sentenced yesterday to four-and-a-half years in jail—with credit for time served she has about 10 months to go.
She’ll then remain under strict conditions of a probation order for three years.

Obed killed her on and off boyfriend, 49-year-old Jimmy Corcoran, by stabbing him once in the side of the neck.
It happened in August of 2021 at the corner of Cookstown Road and Cabot Street.
Justice Glen Noel said Obed’s actions were the result of extreme intoxication—including a mix of alcohol, crack cocaine and marijuana—noting while that’s not an excuse, it does explain it.
Obed is also expected to return home to the Big Land where counselling and community support await her.
