The province has made a recommendation that the Departments of Transportation and Digital Government consider amendments to the Highway Traffic Act to improve the safety of young children learning to ride a bicycle.
That includes supervisory requirements and allowing children to ride on the sidewalk until they develop the skills to ride on the road in traffic.
The recommendation was made following the death of a child in Shea Heights in August. The little girl was riding her bicycle when she was struck by a pickup. She succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
The Child Death Review Committee, which examines all deaths involving children, submitted its report to the Department of Justice in December for further review and recommendations.
