A man is facing multiple charges after a dramatic chase involving a stolen vehicle in Carbonear.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. on February 9, police received a report of damage to a home and a vehicle after a stolen SUV was intentionally driven into it.
Police tracked the SUV down and tried to pull it over, but the patrol vehicle was rammed by the SUV, which sped off. A number of roadblocks were set up, but officers moved the patrol car after the SUV threatened to ram it.
At another roadblock, police laid down a spike belt, which the SUV tried to avoid by reversing quickly, smashing into another police car, leaving the officers inside with minor injuries. A tire of the SUV was popped by the belt, but the SUV once again sped off.
It was later found abandoned on a gated commercial parking lot, where the gate had been hit with the vehicle.
Police were able to track down the driver, 28-year-old Adam Whalen, who was arrested and charged with flight from police, three counts of assaulting an officer with a weapon, assault with a weapon, prohibited and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
Whalen has previously been involved in multiple similar incidents and was previously under a driving prohibition.
He remains in custody.
