A local restaurant owner is urging restaurant goers to adjust their Valentine’s Day plans rather than cancel them ahead of the forecasted snow storm.
Typically, the winter is a slow time for restaurants as the holiday season has ended, but the summer tourism season has not yet started.
Jessica Holmes, Owner of Arbour Restaurant and Lounge in Bay Bulls, says restaurants rely on special events like Valentine’s Day.
She says minor holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day are what they refer to as “milestone events”, which bring in enough business to get small operations through the slow months.
She is urging customers to change their reservation, rather than cancel it in the wake of adverse weather.
Holmes says sometimes when they see widespread cancellations due to weather, it can be the nail in the coffin for local restaurants.
Florist Calls for Early Shopping
A local florist is encouraging people not to wait until the last minute to do their Valentine’s Day shopping.
Kristyna Adamova, owner of Newfoundland Floral Design in downtown St. John’s, says orders have been coming in steady, but things usually pick up at the last minute.
With a storm looming, she encourages everyone to pick up their floral arrangements as soon as possible.
She says they’ve extended their hours to accommodate the increased foot traffic. If someone places an order at the last minute, she says they can accommodate, but if the weather doesn’t co-operate, they may not be able to carry out their deliveries and may have to hold off until after Valentine’s Day.
Adamova says their best selling bouquet is a mix of red and white flowers that have a local touch.
Her shop carries a variety of different flowers to appeal to everyone’s preference. Adamova forages other materials for her bouquets during the summer so that every customer gets a piece of Newfoundland and Labrador in their arrangement.
