It’s a messy start to the day in eastern portions of the province including metro with many delayed openings. Schools in the St. John’s Metro region have been closed for the day. Metrobus and GoBus are not operating this morning. A further update about the resumption of service will be provided at 11:00.
Eastern Newfoundland was virtually shut down yesterday due to heavy snow and strong winds. Most areas in the storm belt ended up with about 40 cm.
Environment Canada Meteorologist David Neil says following an overnight lull, things will ramp up again this morning in some areas, especially central Newfoundland. Metro is in for about 5-10 cm by the end of tonight.
He says the winds will switch to north-westerly, but will remain strong. He says many areas under the winter storm warning will continue to see snow accumulate.
Neil says the snow will start to die down in the south, but winds will remain strong.
