The offshore regulator is reporting a “near miss” that could’ve led to loss of life.
The incident occurred more than a week ago, on August 7, involving a crew change between two vessels, but the C-NLOPB did not say where.
ExxonMobil told the C-NLOPB that the operation involved the ships Amazon Conqueror and Victory G, using a gangway between them.
But they say the crew change was stopped “when it was indicated that the gangway was approaching operating condition limits for safely transporting personnel.”
The platform subsequently gave way and detached from the Victory G, leaving it suspended between the two vessels.
No one was hurt, but the C-NLOPB said the incident “had the potential for fatality.”
The gangway has since been taken out of service and will remain out of commission until it has been repaired or replaced and recertified.
The C-NLOPB says it is monitoring ExxonMobil’s investigation into the incident.
