The latest chapter of the Fraser Institute’s comparison of crime trends in Canada and the US shows that both violent and property crime rates are increasing in Canada and have now surpassed comparable crime rates in the US.
The latest chapter is part of a larger upcoming study examining crime rates in both countries.
The Fraser Institute says between 2014 and 2022 violent crimes in Canada increased by 43.8 per cent while property crime is 27.5 per cent higher in Canada than the US.
Homicide rates are significantly lower in Canada, however, they are on the rise with the number of murders increasing from 1.5 per 100,000 people in 2014, to 2.3 in 2022 – a 53 per cent increase.
