Aboriginal people living on the coast of Labrador are calling on government to include them in any future expansion of hydro capacity. Specifically, the Nunatsiavut Government wants the authorities to avoiding repeating past mistakes, especially regarding how land is prepared for flooding.
They worry about the downstream health and environmental effects from Gull Island, namely the buildup of methylmercury caused by rotting vegetation.
The communities in question rely on diesel generation, but they would like to have access to the hydro grid for as cleaner and more stable supply of power.
