Two brothers made their first appearances in provincial court in St. John’s this morning — one charged with first-degree murder, the other with helping him escape.
Nineteen-year-old Ibrahim Hussein and 23-year-old Hussein Hussein, originally from Syria, were arrested during a dramatic take-down in the parking lot of the Marine Atlantic terminal in Port aux Basques yesterday.
They had been on the run since Tuesday night, when 33-year-old Gerald Kyle Hynes was shot to death on Watson Street in the Virginia Park area of St. John’s.

The younger of the two is charged with first-degree murder and several gun charges, while the elder brother is accused of helping him get away and obstructing police.
Ibrahim Hussein was found hiding in the trunk of a car, with his brother behind the wheel, as they waited for the ferry.
The alleged killer said nothing as he was escorted into the courtroom this morning, no longer sporting the identifying dreadlocks in the police mug shot released earlier this week.

His older brother appeared in court minutes earlier by video from the Corner Brook detention centre.
Both remain in custody with their next court dates set for May 5th.
Ibrahim Hussein will be back in court before then, on April 24th, to deal with pre-existing charges of assault and two counts of making death threats.
The victim also had a court appearance scheduled for that date, to alter conditions of a probation order.
