It was an uplifting experience for a town in Labrador as a retired hockey player who moved to the broadcast booth spent a few days there talking all things hockey—and beyond.
Saroya Tinker, originally from Ontario, now holds an administrative role in the PWHL, where she is responsible for diversity, inclusion, and gender equity.
Torngat Mountains MHA Lela Evans says that even though there are no paved roads in Nain and it’s as remote as it gets, Tinker didn’t bat an eyelash and took all the time necessary to respond to requests for selfies and more. Evans notes it wasn’t just girls who were interested in Tinker’s remarks on issues such as barriers facing Indigenous people and women—boys were also eager to hear what she had to say. As a visible minority herself, Tinker shares common experiences with those facing similar barriers, says the MHA.
